the skin-gut thing is real and I hate that I ignored it for so long
Right so this time of year my skin always does something annoying. Not full breakouts, just that dull, slightly reactive thing where it looks tired even when I've slept fine and eaten well. It took me embarrassingly long to connect it properly to what's happening internally during seasonal transitions.
Basically when the weather shifts — temperature drops at night, heating comes on indoors, diet changes because we stop reaching for salads and start wanting something heavier — your gut microbiome actually responds to that. And your skin is one of the first places that shows it. The gut-skin axis research has come on a lot in the last few years and while I wouldn't overstate it, there's decent evidence that diversity of the gut microbiome influences inflammatory skin responses. So that dull, slightly reactive thing I get? Probably not just the weather directly hitting my skin. It's more like a chain reaction.
What's actually helped me during these changeover weeks:
- Fermented foods daily, not occasionally. I'm talking a proper portion of kimchi, kefir, or live yoghurt — not just a teaspoon on the side. I aim for one proper serving a day and I do genuinely notice a difference after about ten days.
- Not stripping my diet back too much. There's this tendency in autumn to do a "reset" and cut loads of stuff out. Honestly that's probably the worst thing you can do when your body is already adjusting.
- Omega-3s. Walnuts, oily fish twice a week minimum, good oil on everything. Skin barrier function is heavily influenced by essential fatty acids and it's one of the most consistent findings in dermatological nutrition research.
- Not changing my entire skincare routine at once. I know this is supposed to be about internal stuff but honestly introducing three new products in one week during a skin-reactive period is chaos.
The collagen I have in my smoothies I've kept going through all of this — I'm not going to pretend there's ironclad evidence for every claim made about it, but the amino acid profile is genuinely useful for skin structure and it's become enough of a habit that dropping it felt like a variable I didn't need to introduce. My smoothies are pretty straightforward at the moment, nothing fancy.
Mind you, none of this is dramatic or quick. It took about three weeks to notice my skin settling and even then it's not perfect. But it's less reactive, which for this time of year I'll take.
